I recently came back from a trip to New York and on my last day needed to get from Downtown Brooklyn to LaGuardia Airport. When I missed my shuttle bus by seconds, I was faced with a 30-minute wait or bite the bullet and pay the astronomical cost for an Uber. With only 2 ½ hours before my flight, I decided on the Uber—the wrong decision in hindsight.
After two hours in standstill traffic and $175, I arrived disoriented and panicked at the airport only to find my flight delayed. I learned from my Uber driver that New York buses have dedicated lanes, and despite the initial wait, would have reached the airport faster had I waited. The bus ride would have cost me just $2.90 and spared me the stress of compulsively checking my phone for traffic updates.
The Value of Public Transportation
This experience highlights the importance of public transportation, not just for those who rely on it daily but also for those who have other options. In my case, I would have saved over 170 dollars and the stress of waiting in bumper-to-bumper traffic. Public transportation is often more efficient, cost-effective, and less stressful than alternative modes of travel, especially in busy cities like New York.
For many, public transportation is a necessity. However, even those of us fortunate enough to afford alternatives can benefit from using it. Public transportation can save money, reduce stress, and contribute to a more sustainable environment by lowering carbon emissions.
According to the American Public Transportation Association (APTA), public transportation reduces the nation’s carbon emissions by 37 million metric tons annually and saves the U.S. 4.2 billion gallons of gasoline each year. It also supports economic growth, providing people with access to jobs, education, and services. This translates to less traffic congestion, a healthier environment, and enhanced economic opportunities for communities.
